A transflective-type liquid crystal display device, comprising, at least,
a pair of substrates, and a liquid crystal material disposed between the
pair of substrates. The liquid crystal material is a
polarization-shielded smectic liquid crystal material capable of
providing a tunable birefringence system wherein the magnitude of
anisotropy of the refractive index of the liquid crystal layer can be
regulated by the intensity of an applied electric field.
