A polyimide-containing liquid crystal alignment treating agent having a structure of the formula (I) incorporated therein, ##STR00001## wherein Q is a single bond or a divalent organic group, R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 represent aromatic groups, and R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 may be the same as, or different from, one another.
