Rylene derivatives of the general formula I ##STR00001## where the variables have the following meanings: R is hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.1 C.sub.30-alkyl, aryl or hetaryl; R.sup.1 is hydrogen or bromine; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 C.sub.6-alkyl; R.sup.3 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 C.sub.18-alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl or hetaryl; and n is 2 or 3.
