A flexible composite scintillator was prepared by mixing fast, bright,
dense rare-earth doped powdered oxyorthosilicate (such as LSO:Ce, LSO:Sm,
and GSO:Ce) scintillator with a polymer binder. The binder is transparent
to the scintillator emission. The composite is seamless and can be made
large and in a wide variety of shapes. Importantly, the composite can be
tailored to emit light in a spectral region that matches the optimum
response of photomultipliers (about 400 nanometers) or photodiodes (about
600 nanometers), which maximizes the overall detector efficiency.
