The present invention relates to a phthalamide derivative represented by the general formula (I): ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, X, Y, m, and n are as defined in the disclosure, which can be used as the active ingredient in an agricultural or horticultural insecticide that exhibits an excellent insecticidal effect even when used in a small active-ingredient amount.
