A class D switching amplifier has a pulse width modulator that drives a
speaker. The amplifier includes an over-current protection circuit, which
includes current-monitoring MOSFETs that are each in parallel with one of
four power MOSFETs. Signals taken from one side of the current-monitoring
MOSFETs go to a logic circuit that removes the amplifier input circuit
when the logic circuit indicates that an over-current condition is
present. Current through the current-monitoring MOSFETs also goes through
the speaker, thus improving amplifier efficiency.
