The present invention relates to the use of phase equilibria as shown in the phase diagram of Cu--In--Se for the preparation of solid compositions. Further, a new method for directly obtaining .alpha. CulnSe2 from a liquid phase, preferably as a single phase composition and novel single phase .alpha. CulnSe2 compositions are provided.
