A holographic recording medium has at least a recording layer with a thickness of L which comprises a recording layer material having an absorption coefficient of .alpha. and containing a photorefractive material, wherein the optical density .alpha.L represented by the product of the absorption coefficient .alpha. and the thickness L is in the range from 0.3 to 2.0.
