A gain setting method for setting a gain in an amplifier that amplifies signals obtained from an optical disk, which comprises: a measuring step for measuring an output level of the amplifier; and a gain setting step for setting the gain as the value of the output level/target level, when the measured output level is 1/N-N times (N is an integer of 2 or larger) with respect to the preset target level.
