The invention relates to a method for inhibiting the growth of organisms causing body odor on a human or animal body. The invention comprises the following step: topical application of 1,2-decanediol, wherein the amount of 1,2-decanediol applied is sufficient to inhibit the growth of organisms forming body odor at the site of application.
