A process for producing a food composition is provided. The food composition comprises an ester of 1,3-propanediol, and the 1,3-propanediol used to form the ester is biologically-derived. The process comprises mixing an ester of 1,3-propanediol into a food composition. Another process includes providing 1,3-propanediol with at least 90% biobased carbon, contacting the 1,3-propanediol with an organic acid, which forms the ester, recovering the ester; and incorporating the ester into a food composition. Also provided is a composition comprising a 1,3-propanediol ester and a food ingredient. The food composition can further comprise a glycol component, and that glycol component can be 1,3-propanediol.
