Latent TGF.beta. induces constitutive activation of NF-.kappa.B but does not activate Smad signaling. Latent TGF.beta. may be used to identify modulators of signaling pathways that are essential for tumor maintenance. Latent TGF.beta. may also be used to protect a patient from treatments that induce apoptosis.
