The present invention relates to particles or powders of a compound of formula Zn.sub.1-yM.sub.yO.sub.1-xS.sub.x, wherein x has a value in the range from 0.01 to 0.08, M represents a divalent metal and y has a value in the range from 0 to 0.2, the compound having a wurtzite structure.
