A power system for a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine
and an electric machine is disclosed. The electric machine has a stator,
a permanent magnet rotor, an uncluttered rotor spaced from the permanent
magnet rotor, and at least one secondary core assembly. The power system
also has a gearing arrangement for coupling the internal combustion
engine to wheels on the vehicle thereby providing a means for the
electric machine to both power assist and brake in relation to the output
of the internal combustion engine.
