A system of one embodiment is disclosed that includes a load, a power
supply, and a mechanism. The load is operable in a default mode and an
alternate mode. The load has better performance in the default mode than
in the alternate mode, and consumes less peak power in the alternate mode
than in the default mode. The power supply is connectable to an external
power source to provide voltage to at least the load. The mechanism
causes the load to operate in the alternate mode upon detecting the
voltage provided by the power supply dropping below a predetermined
threshold level than a predetermined threshold number of times.
