A composition for promoting osteogenesis and increasing bone mineral content and a preventative/therapeutic agent for bone diseases comprising .beta.-cryptoxanthin and zinc compound at a concentration that does not exhibit a significant effect of increasing bone calcium level when used separately, as active ingredients are prepared. Further, .beta.-cryptoxanthin and zinc compound are added/compounded to a food or food material, or feed, at a concentration that does not exhibit a significant increasing effect of bone calcium level, when used separately.
