The present invention relates to methods for diagnosing multiple sclerosis in a subject, the method, comprising determining the level of phosphorylation of a marker in a biological sample from the subject, wherein the marker is selected from .alpha.1-antitrypsin (a1AT) and vitamin D binding protein (VDBP); and comparing the level of phosphorylation of the marker in the sample to a reference value.
