The invention is a staggered splice and method for making the same. The
staggered splice is used to join two multi-fiber optic cables. Each
opposing pair of optic fibers is cleaved such that they all have
substantially the same combined length and provide fully operable
communication. The light transmitting interfaces are staggered with
respect to each other. The individual splices can be mechanical or fusion
splices. The splices are typically bundled and protected with a sheath.
The staggered splice is particularly applicable for connecting torpedo
payout spools wound with the multi-fiber optic micro cable to the
shipboard side wire.
