An organic electroluminescent device includes an anode, a cathode, and an
organic layer having a light-emitting area and arranged between the anode
and the cathode. The organic layer contains in at least a part thereof at
least one aminostyrylnaphthalene compound represented by the following
formula [I], [II] or [III]: ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2,
R.sup.11, R.sup.12, R.sup.23 and R.sup.24 are each a phenyl or naphthyl
group, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.13, R.sup.14, R.sup.25 and R.sup.26 are
each an electron attracting group such as a cyano group, and R.sup.5,
R.sup.15 and R.sup.27 are each a substituent group such as an alkyl
group.
