A presentation value associated with each of the plurality of data items is determined, the presentation value of a respective data item being a value associated with the respective data item by a first user in exchange for the presentation of the data item by a publication system. The plurality of data items are ranked for presentation to a second user, the ranking being performed using the respective presentation values associated with the plurality of data items.
