There are provided oligoarylene derivatives capable of emitting blue light at high luminous efficiency which are represented by the following general formulae (1) to (4): Ar.sup.1-Ch-Ar.sup.2 (1) Ch.sup.1-L-Ch.sup.2 (2) Ar.sup.3-(L.sup.1).sub.a-Ch.sup.3-(L.sup.2).sub.b-Ar.sup.4 (3) Ar.sup.5-Ch.sup.4-(Ar.sup.7).sub.n-L.sup.3-(Ar.sup.8).sub.m-Ch.sup.5-Ar.s- up.6 (4) wherein Ch, Ch.sup.1 and Ch.sup.2 are respectively a group containing at least one substituted or unsubstituted condensed aromatic ring having 14 to 20 nuclear atoms; Ch.sup.3, Ch.sup.4 and Ch.sup.5 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 14 to 20 nuclear atoms; Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2, Ar.sup.3, Ar.sup.4, Ar.sup.5 and Ar.sup.6 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 5 to 30 nuclear atoms; Ar.sup.7 and Ar.sup.8 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 5 to 30 nuclear atoms; L.sup.1, L.sup.2 and L.sup.3 are respectively a connecting group; and a, b, n and m are respectively an integer of 0 to 1, as well as organic electroluminescent devices using the same.
