A file folding technique reduces the number of duplicate data blocks of
the file consumed on a storage device of a file server. According to the
file folding technique, the "old" data blocks are being overwritten with
"new" data and that new data is identical to the data of the "old" data,
no write operation occurs. The invention reduces disk space consumption
in a file server and also reduces the number of write operations directed
to disks associated with the file server.
