An extract of a plant of the genus Gynostemma is described. The extract is
obtainable by a process wherein an aqueous extract is further extracted
with n-butanol. The extract has a high level of actives, such as
saponins, and/or a low level of impurities. The extract is particularly
suitable for use in food or beverage compositions owing to its high
purity and clean taste. Such compositions may be used to reduce the blood
lipid levels of an individual and provide associated health benefits.
