A method for inhibiting nitric oxide and/or prostaglandin E.sub.2 synthesis. The method comprises administering a composition to a subject, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of butylidene phthalide, citronellol, geraniol or combinations thereof, which can be used to reduce or relieve the syndromes of the inflammation.
