A pharmaceutical composition is produced by obtaining an antibody which specifically recognizes an extracellular domain of SIRP.beta. and formulating the antibody with a pharmaceutical acceptable carrier. The patient suffering from infectious disease or cancer is treated by administering the pharmaceutical composition to activate macrophages.
