There are disclosed derivatives of 3-chromancarboxylic acid represented by formula I ##STR00001## their pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and prodrugs thereof which are useful for treatment and control of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) and its related vascular disease as well as obesity and lipid disorders.
