The present invention relates to a novel method for providing a cathartic effort to a patient in need of cathartic induction, which comprises administering to the patient a cathartic-inducing effective amount of halogenated bioactive lipid comprising the following patial structure (I): ##STR00001## The method is useful for relieving or preventing constipation, and also for cleansing the gastrointestinal tract.
