The present invention is a system for generating power using water current. In one embodiment, a subsurface power generating system includes a first power generating node, with at least one cross-flow turbine, at least one universal gear coupled to the at least one cross-flow turbine, at least one modular generator; and at least one clutch for engaging and disengaging the at least one modular generator and the at least one universal gear.
