The present invention relates to compounds on apatite basis, having the general formula M.sub.5 (AO.sub.4).sub.3X wherein X is situated in the hexagonal channels of the apatite structure and includes Cu-atoms, processes for the preparation thereof as well as applications of these compounds. The compounds presented herein are particularly useful as pigments.
