Compounds useful as antiproliferative agents, radioprotective agents and cytoprotective agents, including, for example, anticancer agents, are provided according to formula I: wherein ring A, ring B,,X, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, a, and b are as defined herein.
