According to the present invention, a material that can be used as a hole transporting material is provided. Further, a material that is easily kept in a non-crystalline state and can be used as a hole transporting material is also provided. One embodiment of the present invention is a compound represented by a general formula (1). In the general formula (1), R.sup.1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms.
