Disclosed is a composition from shark cartilage comprising immunoactive proteoglycans and other immunoactive components having a molecular weight greater than about 100 KD, wherein the composition has a uronic acid content of about 0.05-0.5 .mu.g glucuronic acid per .mu.g of the composition. The composition may be useful for treating or preventing tumor growth, bacterial infections, viral infections and/or fungal infections.
