Macrolide compounds of formula (I) wherein X, R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, have the meanings as defined in the specification, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, pharmaceutical compositions containing them as active ingredient and the use thereof in the treatment and prophylaxis of inflammatory diseases, are described. ##STR00001##
