A cellulose powder which has an average degree of polymerization of 150 to 450, an average particle diameter of 30 to 250 .mu.m, an apparent specific volume exceeding 7 cm.sup.3/g, and a retention of polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of 400 to 190% or higher.
