Compounds of formula (I): ##STR00001## wherein Ar, X, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as defined herein. The compounds are useful as reverse transcriptase inhibitors against wild type and single or double mutant strains of HIV.
