In an automated library, data cartridges, such as magnetic tape
cartridges, are stored in multi-cartridge storage cells or shelves and
accessed by data storage drives. An accessor with a deep-reach gripper
transports cartridges between storage cells and storage drives. The
gripper is capable of extending into the cell to grip and remove a
cartridge stored in any position therein. The gripper may include a
scissors mechanism, a set of units extendable with lead screws, or
another extendable mechanism.
