A liquid crystal display device includes first and second aligning films
which are respectively arranged on first and second substrates. A liquid
crystal layer is provided between the first and the second aligning
films. A first polarizing plate is arranged on an opposite side of the
first substrate. A second polarizing plate is arranged on an opposite
side of the second substrate. A viewing angle compensating film formed of
at least one discotic liquid crystal, which the compensating film being
arranged in at least one of a part between the first polarizing plate and
the first substrate and a part between the second polarizing plate and
the second substrate. At least one retardation plate is arranged in at
least one of a part between the first polarizing plate and the first
substrate and a part between the second polarizing plate and the second
substrate.
