A composition of formula I [Rf(CH2)m(O)n]x-A wherein R.sub.f is a straight or branched perfluoroalkyl group having from about 2 to about 20 carbon atoms, or a mixture thereof, m is a positive integer equal to or greater than 3, n is 0 or 1, x is 1 to about 3, A is --P(O)(OR.sup.1).sub.y(OM.sup.+).sub.3-y-x, --C(O)CH(SO.sub.3.sup.-M.sup.+)CH.sub.2C(O)--, --(CH.sub.2CH.sub.2O).sub.d(CH.sub.2CHR.sup.2O).sub.eR.sup.3, or --SO.sub.2B, M.sup.+ is an alkali metal ion, NH.sub.4.sup.+, or NH.sub.2.sup.+(CH.sub.2CH.sub.2OH).sub.2, B is N(R.sup.2).sub.2 or N(CH.sub.2CH.sub.3)(CH.sub.2CH.sub.2OH), R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl, R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, R.sup.3 is H or CH.sup.3, y is 0 to about 1, d is 0 to about 16, e is 0 to about 16, provided that (d+e) is from about 3 to about 16 is disclosed.
