A process and method for making a superior lubricant or distillate fuel component by the alkylation of C.sub.5+ olefins with isoparaffins to produce a "capped" (alkylated) olefin using an acidic chloroaluminate ionic liquid catalyst system. Preferably the catalyst system includes a Bronsted acid.
