In an optical data network, such as a passive optical network (PON), an
optical line terminator (OLT) measures the strengths of one or more
signals received from the optical network units (ONUs) and generates a
message containing an indication responsive to the measured signal
strength. The OLT transmits the message to the ONUs. The ONUs generate
packets having preambles of a length responsive to the indication
contained in the message.
