A system and method for retrieving and displaying data from an onboard
memory of an electronic control unit in a vehicle is disclosed. The
electronic control unit includes at least one parameter identifier that
defines an address for a first data structure. The first data structure
includes information on the amount and location of the data in the
nonvolatile memory, as well as a version document number corresponding to
a version document stored in a scan tool. The scan tool can access the
parameter identifier and onboard data by the entry of an identifier
number. The retrieved data is inserted into the version document for
display.
