The invention relates to a granular perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprising a top magnetic layer on a granular layer wherein the magnetic layer comprises a continuous Co alloy film that results in the recording medium having less than 10% CoOx on the surface of the protective overcoat when the recording medium is exposed to 80% relative humidity at 80.degree. C. for 4 days.
