A computed design of a composite camera having multiple digital imaging
devices is generated automatically in accordance with the following
process. A target volume to be captured by the composite camera and a
target resolution for capturing the target volume are obtained. A
representation of a view frustum of each of a plurality of digital
imaging devices is generated based on at least one characteristic of each
device. The digital imaging devices are organized based on the view
frusta. A set of digital imaging devices is selected from the organized
digital imaging devices, where the view frusta of the set of digital
imaging devices substantially covers the target volume with at least the
target resolution. The set of digital imaging devices are positioned
based on each device's physical characteristics. A computed design of the
composite camera that includes digital imaging devices held in position
by a mechanical fixture is generated.
