One or both of the distal and proximal sections includes a scoop arranged to nest within the sections when not in use, and the interior of the distal section is adapted to temporarily hold and sanitarily retain fecal matter. Together, the proximal and distal sections form a bat-like structure when not in use, thereby facilitating ease of carrying by a user. The handle of the proximal section includes a separable light source arranged to illuminate the exterior of the unit, acting as a safety light, and also arranged to shine down to the ground beneath, thereby facilitating the process of locating target fecal matter.
