The present invention provides a filter for electronic display devices, comprising a squarylium compound represented by General Formula (I): ##STR00001## [wherein X represents a group represented by following Formula (A): ##STR00002## (wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom and the like; and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 may be the same or different and each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group optionally having substituent(s) and the like) and the like; and Y represents a group represented by following Formula (C): ##STR00003## (wherein R.sup.9 represents a halogen atom, an alkyl group optionally having substituent(s) and the like; and R.sup.10 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group optionally having substituent(s) and the like) and the like, and "n" represents an integer of 0 to 5].
