A method of coating a substrate is disclosed. The method includes
providing a substrate; depositing an infrared reflecting layer over at
least a portion of a substrate; depositing a primer layer over at least a
portion of the infrared reflective layer; depositing a dielectric layer
over at least a portion of the primer layer; and depositing an absorbing
layer, wherein the absorbing layer is deposited either under the infrared
reflective layer or over the dielectric layer, wherein the absorbing
layer comprises an alloy and/or mixture of (a) a metal having an index of
refraction at 500 nm less than or equal to 1.0 and (b) a material having
a .DELTA.G.degree..sub.f of greater than or equal to -100 at 1000.degree.
