The polarization-multiplexed signal contains two data signals that are orthogonally polarized in relation to one another. Their carrier signals are derived from the same source and thus have the same wavelength. The phase difference between the carrier signals, is adjusted or regulated in such a way that it corresponds to 90.degree.. The phase difference of the carrier signals permits the susceptibility to polarization mode dispersion to be significantly reduced.
