A piezoelectric/electrostrictive material having a nonstoichiometric composition represented by a general formula (1): (1-x)(Bi.sub.aNa.sub.bTiO.sub.3+.delta.)-x(K.sub.cNbO.sub.3+.zeta.) (1) wherein 0.01.ltoreq.x<0.08, a<0.5, 1.01.ltoreq.(a/b).ltoreq.1.08, 0.92.ltoreq.(a+b)/c<0.99, and 0.9.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.1.1, and .zeta..noteq.0 when .delta.=0 and .delta..noteq.0 when .zeta.=0.
