A HC adsorbing material whose deterioration can be judged with high accuracy and reliability. The HC adsorbing material contains a zeolite having cation adsorption sites (Al sites) to which are bonded ions of an element (Ce.sup.+) that exhibits oxygen storage capacity (OSC) in a nonionic state (when present as an oxide).
