A liquid crystal display (LCD) device includes first and second
substrates, an electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode liquid
crystal layer between the first and second substrates, a first polarizer
under the first substrate, a second polarizer on the second substrate,
and a first compensation film between the first and second polarizers,
wherein an optical transmission axis of the first compensation film is
set at a 90.degree. angle with respect to an alignment direction of the
ECB liquid crystal layer.
